Q: If my unit is part of this recall to repair program, what could happen if I don't unplug it and don't use the repair kit?
A: Consumers need to follow the recommendations of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and InSinkErator by unplugging their unit and making the repair if their dispenser is part of this program. Otherwise a situation can occur that can lead to electrical arcing and heat build-up within the dispenser. This could create a fire.

A: No. You should unplug your dispenser so it is no longer heating water if it is included in this recall to repair program.

Q: Can I contact the store where I bought my dispenser to receive the free repair kit or to ask questions?
A: No. The repair kits and details about the program are available on this Web site or calling 1-800-295-8727.

Q: Why has InSinkErator initiated this recall to repair program?
A: InSinkErator is conducting this recall to repair program in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) because with some dispensers, if water leaks from the metal holding tank within the affected units, it can wet the insulating material and can cause electrical arcing and heat build-up within the dispenser. This poses a fire hazard. When InSinkErator became aware of the potential problem posed by this situation, we immediately brought it to the attention of the CPSC.

Q: How many incidents have been reported? Any injuries?
A: InSinkErator has received three reports of holes in the electrical insulation or outer cover of the hot water dispenser. One report involved a kitchen fire that caused nearly $7,000 in property damage (as of June 27th, 2002 when this site was launched).

Q: Which brands of instant hot water dispensers are part of this recall to repair program?
A: View Brand / Model Table

Q: What is InSinkErator's overall safety record?
A: Safety is a top priority for InSinkErator and we have an excellent record of both safety and product performance. Once we became aware of the potential problem with certain hot water dispensers, we immediately alerted the CPSC and began working with them in the best interests of consumer safety.
